Introduction to Feng Shui
Feng Shui is the study of the natural and built environment that is over 3000 years old. Feng Shui is considered to be an art and science that is rooted in architecture, astronomy, physics and design. In practice, the goal of Feng Shui is to create balance so that the energy flow of a person’s environment is optimal.
Chi is the life energy that is in our bodies, in the air we breathe and all the elements of nature surrounding us. This energy is profoundly alive and dynamic by nature in each moment. Ancient western traditions used the term anima mundi to describe how the soul of the world infuses the cosmos with life and intelligence.
The two primal energies of the universe are Yin and Yang and can be understood as inseparable opposites that compose all life. Yin connotes restorative, cool, dark, female energy. While Yang being associated with active, hot, bright, male energy. This system is the same principle underlying the binary code developed by the mathematician Leibniz that is the basis for modern computers.
Feng Shui naturally expands from the binary system and considers the balance of energy among the Five Elements. These elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water and are associated with specific areas within a space based on the cardinal directions. Feng Shui works to nourish these elements in the appropriate areas of a space and artfully influence the balance and flow of chi. With this we naturally harness the essence and vitality of any aspect of our life and health.
